Tuesday 5th April 2022 - Newton St Loe
Today Bryan and I visited NSL where we met Roger and
his son in law Richard, who was visiting from Singapore, David was away so it was the 4
of us. We met in the usual place by NSL farm shop and headed out of the village
to the lanes, on the way seeing Carrion Crow, Jackdaw,
Magpie, and Woodpigeon. Once in the lanes
our first sighting was a Buzzard flying low over
the treetops, also noted were several Lesser Black Back
Gulls circling high in the sky. Skylarks could
be heard singing but took a while before we managed to spot one. Walking down
to Seven Acre Wood a Dunnock was sat on the
hedge and a Blackbird flew across the path a
male Pheasant was at the bottom of the field and
was joined by a female. As we walked around the outside of the wood a Chiffchaff was spotted in one of the trees and while
looking at it Long Tailed and Blue Tits passed by. As we continued back through the
village Goldfinch, Great Tit and Rook were logged. Through the churchyard and through
the field towards send a cow I spotted 2 Green
Woodpeckers in the lane behind the cottages on our left. At Send a Cow
a Robin was added to our day list. At Butterfly
Alley I spotted a pair of Teal on the stream. On
the bottom lake a Cormorant was fishing and 7 Mallard were
counted with another 2 on the top lake. Also seen were 2 Canada Geese a bird I have not seen here in the past
and also 2 Moorhens with another 4 on the top
lake. On the top lake were the pair of Mute Swans, 3
Coot and a pair of Tufted
Ducks. A Goldcrest was seen as we crossed
the dam and in the trees on the left hand side of the Lake was 2 nesting Grey Herons plus 1 seen earlier at the top of the
bottom lake. A Treecreeper was seen in a tree by
the Temple and later another was on a Fir Tree pulling off bits of the trunk and
flying off with it probably for a nest. A Great Spotted
Woodpecker flew over and Bryan found a Stock
Dove on a tree branch. While a calling Nuthatch was
found in a tree above us. The final sighting of the morning was a House Sparrow found back in the village.
