Tuesday 4th April 2023 - Newton St Loe
The 3 Amigos had to abort our usual Tuesday trip as
David was at his caravan and Bryan was collecting his daughter from the airport.
But that was not the end of it as my wife joined me on a short walk from the
Church to the top lake and back before we had to do some shopping.
Driving towards the village a Buzzard was circling above the Seven Acre Wood area. Parking by the church Jackdaw and Woodpigeon flew over as we were changing footwear. On the Send a Cow road (which is not called that any longer) Sparrows were in the hedgerow and visiting the cottage feeders. At the top of the woodland footpath a Nuthatch was calling which I managed to locate high in a tree. Also in the same tree was 2 Blue Tits and in a close by fir tree was a calling Goldcrest. As we continued down the footpath a Great Tit flew up from the stream and a Dunnock was singing from a bush. At the bottom of the footpath I could hear the call of a Chiffchaff but took quite a while before I noticed movement at the top of a tree and with binoculars could confirm it was a Chiffchaff. Nothing new until we were almost at the top of the incline to the bottom lake here a Kingfisher shot past. On the lake were 11 Mallard 2 Moorhens and a Cormorant, and in the small wood at the top of the lake was a Robin.

On the top lake
was 9 Coot and while sitting on the bench
drinking coffee a noticed 2 birds in the distance on the top of a fir tree which
when looked at through binoculars discovered they were Ravens.
Both the Grey Herons nests were occupied with
2 more birds in the trees, on the lake the female Tufted
Duck was still present as were the 2 Little
Grebe but no sign of the Teal or Mute Swans. On the way back a Grey Wagtail was in the overflow outlet. Walking back
through the Send a Cow woodland Long Tailed Tit and
Coal Tit were spotted and walking back through
the field towards the church a Kestrel flew
towards the village and 2 Magpies flew over the
trees. On the way to the shops Lesser Black Back and
Herring Gull ended the days sightings.
