Tuesday 24th March 2026 - Snuff Mills, Duchess Pond, Eastville Park.

Another Tuesday and this week just David and Tony. We chose to do a morning in North Bristol starting at Snuff Mills where we park the car then a walk up the hill to Duchess Pond and finally a walk to Eastville Park. At Snuff Mills the 1st bird of the day was a Moorhen on the river Frome then a Sparrowhawk high in the sky, walking up the river I spotted 2 Grey Wagtails wandering over a gravel bed. Carrion Crows were our next sighting followed by both Blue and Great Tits, a Mallard was stood on a log in the river.

Several Blackbirds were in an ivy-covered tree we then heard the call of a Kingfisher that flew into a tree on the far side of the river.

Nothing more was seen so we walked back to the car park and on towards Duchess pond adding a Jackdaws sat on chimneys and  a Dunnock singing in a bush. As we entered Stoke Park 2 Magpies were in the grass. A footpath under the M32 led us to Duchess Pond and although we did add Canada Goose, Coot and Grey Heron.

I did think we would see a lot more. We then walked to Eastville Park but did not add to our day list until we reached the Lake here we added Mute Swan, Pink Footed Goose of unknown origin, Coal Tit, 2 Jays and a singing Chiffchaff.

Time to get back to the car and on the way we spotted a flock of gulls in the sky containing Herring and Lesser Black Back. While driving home David spotted a Starling on a streetlight. Quite a poor morning for bird numbers with both Duchess Pond and Eastville Park Lake having far less water birds than I would have expected. But there is always next week.
